Laura-Lee Slows Attack on Romania

I don't spend much time focusing on how many people are reading my blog posts. One or one hundred. A visit is a visit. But I do read the statistics because I like to see who is reading them.

I stopped in today to discover that this opinionated, Canadian, Christian, spinster has received more visits from the country of Romania then Canada and the United States COMBINED! I was so surprised by this I went to check on the current news in Romania to see if something particularly different or drastic had happened this week to them. But not anything I can see. Unless a massive attack of boredom hit them.

Screenshot of my Statistics page for this past week.

What is also an odd occurrence is that within the last month I watched a few travels shows about Romania. I would like to personally recommend the one by Rick Steves. I was struck by their harsh past, diversity of peoples and beautiful landscapes and countryside. However, I haven't mentioned or focused on Romania in any blog post, so I can only reason that God is particularly concerned with this country at this time that He would motivate me to learn more about them. And also that they have found their way into my heart and prayers.

At any rate, the more I learn about this small country the more I admire it. So, even though slightly puzzled by their attention, I am deeply flattered by it too. Both here and at my blog, The Bible and the Biz. And to my new Romanian visitors, ... I thank you for the compliment and specifically invite you to visit me here, at my online home, anytime.

Love, Laura-Lee

An Official Post just from ME to YOU

As most of you know, I've been recovering from a lengthy illness and haven't even been strong enough to use my tablet. I'm easing myself back onto the Internet and have posted at Laura-Lee Was Here a couple of times as a "Forward" of other things I've done. But this is the first time I've done it just from me to you. And it seems appropriate that it should be on the occasion of wishing you a happy and restful Sabbath Sunday. (Or Saturday if you are one of my Jewish visitors).

Put aside all the COVID-19 worries and once again burrow yourself safely beneath the "shelter of his wings". Always and still the safest place to be.

I'm sure I'll have lots to say in the future. The severity and nature of my illness changed me immensely, but I am still me.  But for now, I will stop the chit-chat and give you something lighter in nature to look at.

Thank you so much for your faithful concern and stopping by again for another visit at my online home.

Love Laura-Lee

Kitchens During World War 2 (Cookbook Review)

Betty Crocker Lost Recipes: Beloved Vintage Recipes for Today's KitchenBetty Crocker Lost Recipes: Beloved Vintage Recipes for Today's Kitchen by Betty Crocker
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It's hard not to like Betty Crocker and when she (they) go back into history there is definitely something to like.

This cookbook of tried and true recipes is Betty Crocker's (the company, not the person) salute to kitchens and cooks of the past. I was happy to browse through the recipes that made me very hungry. I didn't actually make any of the recipes, but I had an ebook version from my local library predominantly to see if it was something I would like to spend my money on to buy a (paper) hardcopy since I find an ebook useless in my kitchen. (Gets my tablet all full of flour and greasy fingerprints)

What I was disappointed in is that it didn't have enough of the past and didn't go far enough back into the past. It focused mostly on the 1940s and 1950s and I would have enjoyed something that immersed me even deeper into that time. But it was definitely enjoyable to see how a party was thrown back then, how women's lives revolved around the kitchen and the kitchen (and consequently the mom) was the heart and heartbeat of the family. (They are referred to as the "GOOD old days" for a reason.)

I should also tell you that since Betty Crocker prides itself on relevance and accuracy, things like measurements and ways of doing things are updated and included so that you can take a trip to the kitchen of the past in your kitchen of today.

I hope this review helps and if you happen to get this book and try one of the cookie recipes you know where to find me! 🍪 🙋‍♀️ 🇨🇦

Why is Protestant Communion Just Once a Month?

My answer to a question at Quora:

I started my life as a Born-Again Christian forty-two years ago as a Catholic. A few years later I became Pentecostal. I attended a high school predominantly for Baptists and Christian Reformed. And for four decades I've been trying to get a definitive answer to why Protestant churches celebrate Communion only once a month. I have listened to answers that are equivalent to my cat chasing his tail for infinity. So let me cut through it for those who want a straight answer. In one word, CONVENIENCE.

Communion can't be dismissed all together but it makes the service about another thirty minutes longer. The ministers can barely get people to stay in their pew for a regular ninety minutes, so can you imagine if it was two hours EVERY time the congregation gathered? Yikes! Everyone is already getting hungry and cranky.

If you truly want to know what Jesus wants us to do, go and read the accounts of the Last Supper in the gospels for yourself. He says he wants us to remember every time we gather for supper. In my understanding, that makes it more akin to saying grace. I suppose it comes down to your personal choice. (As do all things). How close to doing what Jesus asks do you want to get and how important is that to you? Because the things we value the most are the things we will spend the most time on.

Bread and wine were the staples of almost every Jewish meal. So now, even if there is no bread and wine on my supper table, I don't let one day go by that I don't remember the cross when I eat and drink. And if I had any say or influence in my local church I would have us celebrate Communion each and every time we gathered together for a service. I mean, can we really remember Jesus' shed blood too much? And if we do it too often that it becomes meaningless to us, should we do it less or should we beg God for an attitude adjustment? If we make the excuse that "if we do it too often it becomes meaningless" to all things in the Christian faith that are important we see the ridiculousness of that reasoning. Bible reading? Prayers? Sounds like a scheme of satan to me.

But that is what I have seen, heard, and read. So at least me having to endure years of smoke-screen Church history and theological rhetoric may spare you the same. BTW and FYI, I’m still a member of a church that celebrates Communion only once a month. I don't have much choice and I would never stop fellowship with my Brothers and Sisters in Christ over this. But if you're coming to my home for supper, we will be remembering Jesus' beautiful, atoning work on the cross. Even if it's with Mac n Cheese, a salad, and a glass of milk. Amen.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee (Was Here)
