A Narcissist is formed because someone thinks too highly of themselves.
BAH❗️ WRONG❗️
It's exactly the opposite.
Firstly, let's define what a Narcissist actually is, because the term is thrown around a lot these days.
According to the dictionary,
NARCISSISM is "excessive interest in or admiration of oneself".
Now people have varying degrees of this, but in some people they have such an over the top case of being self involved that they develop Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD.
It develops as they grow up.
At a time when children need to be encouraged and affirmed at every step of the way by their parents and the other adults in their life and often told, "Well done" for their accomplishments, instead they may be told "you were an accident". They may be ignored, neglected or even abused.
People cannot live without some sense of worth and if they aren't getting it from those around them, then they start affirming THEMSELVES to get SELF-worth.
Like a child hugging their knees in a dark place and rocking themselves chanting,
"I matter. I count. I'm okay. I'm good. ..."
If a person grows up having to do this, by the time they are an adult, BOOM π₯, you've got a raging Narcissistic ready to do some major damage to the people around them.
One of the things I find the most tragic about this is Narcissism is 100% curable in therapy, but Narcissists rarely seek therapy because as far as THEY are concerned THEY are not the problem.
EVERYBODY ELSE IS THE PROBLEM! π€¨

I can see everyone is waiting for me to address the BIG question.
"What do I do if I have a Narcissist in my life?"
That is a HUGE and complex question which does not have a quick or easy answer. It will depend on your level of involvement with them (parent, spouse, etc) and their level of Narcissism and whether or not they will seek professional help.
But keep in mind, for the most part, a Narcissist will not change and you may simply need to leave them at some point to preserve yourself.
So, check your motives of WHY you wish to leave and then YOU seek professional help to navigate through these difficult and murky waters.
I sincerely hope by identifying the problems, which is always the first step to finding a solution, I have been helpful as I continue to strive to bring you ...

You DO matter, but not because YOU say it or because I say it but because GOD says it.
